Culture shock is the term used to describe how people feel when they are exposed to an unfamiliar culture or way of life, and the feeling of disorientation and separateness they experience. It's a condition that every international teacher feels in varying degrees, whether they're new to teaching abroad or old hands at it.

Luckily culture shock follows a fairly predictable cycle and there are a number of ways you can prepare for it and lessen the impact of it once you've made the move overseas.

Unfortunately, when describing culture shock, it comes across as a negative thing to be avoided at all costs, and I've just told you it's inevitable for anyone wanting to teach abroad. It's important for you to remember that teaching overseas is an opportunity to explore other cultures and enjoy a better teaching environment. Yes, you will experience culture shock, but you can manage this and it's not all bad!

Factors that can contribute to culture shock are :

* People speaking a different language, dialect or with an unfamiliar accent.

* Dealing with a different currnecy, money that is a different colour, feel and value. Keeping track of exchange rates can become a tiresome chore when living abroad, so once you've received your first paycheck, don't bother. Earn local, spend local!

* People behaving in unfamiliar ways, even local customs can vary from one end of a country to another.

* Spicy and/or unfamiliar food. You may need to substitute 'like' ingredients in your favourite recipes too.

* People staring at you, if you are in a country where your skin colour or facial features stand out as being different, this will happen.

On top of this you'll be the new teacher in school, so the procedures and policies will be different to what you're used to at home.

Recognising culture shock

Recognising culture shock for what it is and acknowledging which stage you're in is the first step to lessening the grip it has on you. For example, if you suddenly feel like you hate your new teaching job because of how hard it is to make the purchasing department understand what it is you're trying to order, recognising this as an effect of culture shock can help you adjust your behaviour.

When you first get to your new home you'll feel happy to be there and everything you see or experience will be wonderful and new. This is the 'honeymoon' stage of culture shock and it feels great! It can last from several days to several months. This is the time where you'll be sending loads of emails to your friend using words and phrases like 'awesome', 'best decision I've ever made', 'don't know why I didn't do this years ago'. Recognise this stage of culture shock and enjoy it.

Next comes the period of frustration, full of situations like the example above. When you sink into this part of the cycle you'll begin to dislike everything about your new home. It'll be too hard, too smelly, too hot, too loud, and everything else 'too'!

This is also when homesickness could strike you with a vengeance. You may find yourself developing a hostile attitude towards every one not of your own nationality and culture. Your old home will suddenly seem like the best place in the world and you may regret ever leaving it.

Strategies to cope with the stress of culture shock

1. Learn some of the local language before you leave home. You've signed a contract that means you're going to be living in your host country for 1-2 years, learning the language will help you get around and make friends. Some great ways to learn the local language while you're still at home...

2. Take time to get used to the new time zone, the different weather and smells, sounds etc.

3. Begin building friendships as soon as you arrive and meet the other new teachers. You'll form a bond with these teachers in the first year especially because they'll be coping with culture shock as well. This will be your support group.

4. Stay in touch with people you've left at home. In my most recent move I found the best medicine for the frustration phase was an email from my old colleagues telling me how unsatisfied they were at my previous school.

5. Cut yourself some slack. When you recognise the symptoms of culture shock, give yourself a break, watch a favourite movie, look at pictures from home, have a meal at your favourite restaurant. Revel in the great things you're experiencing in your new home so that you can put your frustration in perspective.

The Up-Side of the Frustration Stage

Finally you will start to see the funny side of it all and most of the things that made you angry during the frustration stage will either cause you to laugh or you'll be able to shrug your shoulders and pass it off as being a feature of your new home. When you're in this stage of the cycle you'll begin to remember your old home without your rose-coloured glasses again.

You may wonder how I can write with so much confidence about culture shock, and it's because I've experienced it all. I've moved country 7 times in the last 11 years and each time I've been hit with culture shock. Sometimes only a mild dose, but it's always there.

Culture shock has never put me off seeking teaching jobs abroad. I recognise it and work with it. In this article I've given you 5 methods of alleviating the stress of culture shock. Olivier [not understanding]. Is she always such a wittily sort of lady?

Lee [coolly]. She's a piranha ready to bite twenty-four hours a day.

Nurse Rosario. Yes-SS [with her eyebrows up in the air], -----you can use the bathroom, --it's just to the right outside the room here, it's private; but I'll have to be in there with you, would you--would you mind at all?

Incidentally your mother's --Elsie, right? [Lee nods his head yes]--she was here when you were sleeping last night, you seemed a bit fogy last night. She looked as if her world was coming apart; you know she had every church in town praying for you. It was sweet when she held your hand, as if she got you back...which she did, I'm not sure what course in her life would have taken place had you not had the miracle you did have. She had white pearls on, a white blouse and a black tie. I remember everything. [Lee just gawking at the nurse as if in a daze, visualizing the moment, then smiled, saying: 'Yes I remember that,' he commented, 'but so many other times I don't remember,' he added.]

A long pause as they both took a moment to adjust to the current situation.

Lee. Oh yaw! [Surprised.] I've always been a shy kind of fellow when it comes to something similar to that, sort of--sort of shy that is.

Rosario. Oh, I see...Oh, I see you have to have me by your side like it or not.

Rosario quickly takes his pulse and attaches some wiring to him. His pulse has jumped to 150........ Now to 180.]

Nurse Rosario. I got to see the doctor, just sit here [Lee remains on the bed hoping to use the toilet in the private bathroom. He hasn't had a bowel movement in six days.]

As Nurse Rosario leaves the room, she is observed trying to call the doctor over

their paging him: --Oliver looks at Lee and nods his head as if to say, 'what can you do,' and lays back in his bed.

Oliver [to break the tension]. Boy oh boy, --Lee! Is it ever green, I mean really green outside. May is a good month for grass--yaw...everything grows, and grows.

Lee. Yaw, I never thought I'd appreciate grass--green-grass that is, or even notice the different shades of greens within the grass; funny how we appreciate life when it is on the edge ready to disappear. But it is beautiful, from what I've seen of it--the grass that is. I did get to look at it a few days ago, when I was allowed to sit in a chair by my bed. Yes, you appreciate life in a different way; it is no more an item for consumption, that is, a commodity. As for mother, someday I may be standing over her, as she has done here for me praying, and she will not remember all the times I will go to see her, as I do not remember her visiting me most of the times, but I've been told she was here everyday, I think I've been here about three weeks. Things have a way of changing in time Oliver.

In comes the doctor. He notices Lee on the side of the bed, and is getting

briefed by Rosario. He seems to be unsure of the situation. In spite of this, he acts as if he's got it under control, and tries to put on a smile, then quickly takes his pulse, looking at Nurse Rosario.

Dr. Bash [throatily]. Well, Mr. Walters, your heart is flying, and we'll have to do something quick about that.

Lee. Yaw, as long as you don't make me a 'Fruit Cake,' and let me go use that bathroom.

Dr. Bash [staring in thought, looking toward Rosario.] Yes, I did say you could, didn't I. Ok, [a pause--while in thought]...if you agree to have us do some electric-shock treatment on you, slow that heart beat to normal.

Lee. That sounds interesting I think, just translate that for me a little better, 'electric-shocKK!'

Dr. Bash. It's called electric-shock, as I was saying, and it will--hopefully--trigger you heart back to a more normal rhythm, or put another way, pace, if you will. As you know, right now it is racing at close to 190-beats a minute. I want to get your heart back into regularity. For some reason it jumped out of timekeeping, I guess that's the best way of saying it.

Lee. You always have the most choice words for serious issues Doc, do what you need to but I want to take a healthy [he looks at Rosario the nurse--a slight pause in the moment]...I need to go to the bathroom doc.

Dr. Bash [a little annoyed with Lee's insistence, and thinking or wondering if he made the right decision to have electric shock, he moves his jaw a few times]. Rosario, take him in the bathroom and help him, I'll get the equipment we need for the ...you know [he didn't want to scare Lee anymore than what he had already, he knew he was now nervous about the shock-treatment, and did not want him to refuse it].

Lee [darting a look at Rosario]. I'm ready; don't need a wheel chair, just your arm please [looking at the nurse, Rosario from the corner of his eye]; adding, 'I'm similar to my mother, she hates the cane, never utilized it, the one I brought back from the Black Hills; yes, and I hate the wheelchair'.

The doctor now is out of sight, eminently looking for the machine himself. And Rosario has brought Lee into the bathroom, and leaves the door open a bit, as Lee sits down, pulling his garment away from him, she stands by the door watching.

Lee. Rosario, Pa-Please--shut the door... please, and turn around. I can't go if you look--looking my way, or at me.

Rosario [hesitantly]. Ok, but don't try too hard--you know, don't force yourself to go, it is really against policy for me to leave, I mean to turn around, it is like leaving, or taking my eyes off you, but if you're going to insist ok, I don't want your stitches in your chest to become undone ['the zipper you mean,' commented Lee].

Lee. Thanks, I'd tell you...that you're--are, really lovely, but this is not the time or place [Rosario chuckles lightly, walks away from the door, and stands facing the wall to the side of Lee].

Lee is putting a lot of effort into having a bowel movement and Rosario hears...and is getting nervous...

she is starting to turn around, but stops. Then a second groan comes from Lee, finally the bowel movement follows [with a long sigh of relief], which is quite a lot, need I say more. Lee stops, catches his breath, and Rosario quickly, turns around.

Rosario. Are you all right? if I had my hands on you, I could tell your heart rate, by the sounds you are making, the effort that is, was way too much; I would be in trouble for allowing the stress on your heart to ...to you know... it was too much, way too much. Incidentally, I said a prayer; I just hope everything is ok; I mean, first the heart than the stroke now the pulse, what's next [?]

Lee. Listen, I feel really good, not stuffed or anything. My breathing is a little heavy, as if my lungs are too heavy for me, but the doc say's they're all right. Let's go back.

Rosario takes Lee back to his bed and helps him in. Then attaches some wires to his heart to monitor his heart rate, and along side him is a graph showing his heart beats [pulse rate] per minute. Rosario walks out of the room, and Lee keeps staring at the equipment. He is thinking: is there something wrong [?]; --and then stares even closer. He is almost mortified. Then Rosario comes in almost in a gallop.

Rosario [shocked, in disbelief]. Look, look, look...my prayer--it worked, it really worked, your heart rate is going down, it's 94, no, no, it's 86, no 71 [she hugs Lee, and Lee gives her a kiss on the side of her cheek [it's down to 59]. Lee and the Nurse's are thinking, it was the prayer, and the healthy dump [possibly] he had in the bathroom. God works in strange ways that's all I can say [adds Rosario looking at Lee in astonishment].

Rosario now leaves the room, and the Doctor comes in with the machinery to give Lee his electric shock. He tests the two odd looking devices he is holding in each hand, and turns a few knobs.

Lee. What you up to doc?

Dr. Bash. Just got to test this before I use it on you; how was the bathroom scene?

Lee. Doctor!

Dr. Bash. Yes!

Lee. Look at me [the doctor stops for a moment and looks at Lee]. Now look at the device here showing my heart rate, it is normal L-L-L-L-! [He adds the L's in there so the doctor is sure to look].

Dr. Bash. What happened, you are back to normal--: my gosh. No need for this [and he walks out of the room as if nothing happened and out of sight; as if he's use to miracles on a daily bases; or embarrassed he was going to give electric shock to a man who didn't need it any longer].

Lee now is thinking about Rosario and her Latin completion. She is build just right for him. Then he mumbles: 'Mom will not be worried anymore,' with a sigh of relief.

Lee. She's not a fish, but, do you really think so?

I wanted to find out what, if any difference there might be in the talent of the teams from AF2 and the returning AFL squads. The best way to do that would be by speaking with the most successful AF2 team that is making the transition. In four years, the Shock won the AF2 title twice. In that four years they were in the playoffs each season and did lose one title game. While doing that, the team led the league in attendance each season. So, what do they expect now that they are in the AFL?

I spoke with the Director of Communication for the five-year-old Spokane Shock, Kevin Maloney. He and his team are glad to be in the AFL and do in fact believe that it is a step up for the players.

He said, "It is a different level of play and the team cannot rest on their laurels or the teams past success or glory. They must prepare to play at a higher level."

I asked if the Shock and Rattlers had a pipeline for players that they shared, he said no, "the ties of players moving from Shock to Rattlers are coincidental." "Davila, current Rattlers QB and former top gun for the Shock wanted to be closer to So-Cal and his new baby and family, so it worked out well for Nick."

I asked if the AFL talent, its experience, and reach were part of the Shock's move to the new league. "All of the above, the talent, national broadcast of games, NFL Network, and their game of the week. Now the front office needs to step. The talent in the AFL, no question it is a higher level of football. The highest levels are the NFL, Canada, now the UFL, and then the AFL. That is it, there is no higher level. The AFL is the highest level of indoor football there is."

"A good is example is our new Head Coach Rob Keefe, he was great AF2 player and had 19 interceptions in 2 years and went to play for the AFL Soul and had zero that shows the difference."

I wanted to know if being at this new level made it harder or easier to recruit? "Both, the Shock have added a 2,000 square foot weight room and a new locker room. We want to do everything we can within the rules to make ourselves a better team. We added more seats for our fans. These are all things that before we did not need."

"In the world of the AFL, everyone has heard of the Chicago, Orlando, Jacksonville, Milwaukee teams, not everyone has heard of Spokane! The first two weeks of training camp have gone well, we and the players are adapting, and they notice the difference and want to play here, to stay here, and make it a place to live in the off season."

Will you use the Shock's success and tradition or are you starting from scratch in the AFL? "We will use our tradition and wins on the field. It is one of the reason players want to be a part of our team. We have great fans and a winning tradition and we will not shy away from that. We are doing the right thing"

Rivals, who will they be in the AFL? "Our division opponents are our rivals. Of course, any team that has former Shock players on it will become rivals because they are fan favorites and everyone knows them. We are in a unique division because we only have three teams in ours and everyone else had four."

Do you need to make adjustments due to any rule changes? "No, the rules are the same so that part is seamless."

On community involvement, will that become a bigger, or less of an effort? "We are deeply involved in our community and because Coach Keefe was as involved as a player he will step it up as the Head Coach. He, our team, and I (Kevin Maloney) will be leading the team in community in season and out of season."

The Shock is part of a big event we do with Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, the "Free Cone Day." They give out free ice cream at the Ben and Jerry Franchises and use Celebrity Scoopers at each location. Each Celebrity picks a local charity to donate the funds that are raised to."

"The Shock also participate in Read Across America, it celebrates the creator of Dr. Seuss's birthday. The team, players and Coach Keefe, will read and participate. We are also deeply involved with the Children's Miracle Network and have raised a lot of money for them."

Sounds like the Shock is a 24/7 kind of place? "We are always looking for ways to be different, to become better, and to make things better for our community, our fans, and our players. Our team ownership is involved on a daily basis. Majority Owner, Brady Nelson, his office is right behind mine and he is checking in with me and heavily involved as is GM Adam Nebeker. We have a young franchise, youth in ownership and all around the organization. There is a very high energy level here. We are working towards improving, 24/7 365 days a year."

There has been a change in pay structure in the AFL, many players have decided not play and take the cut. How has this affected you coming from the AF2? "It has meant an increase for us and we have had to account for it in our budget. That is why we added more seats. Tickets sales, that is our bread and butter, we led the AF2 in attendance and we are going to strive to be the top in the AFL. We know you have to spend a lot to make a lot and make things grow."

"There are former Shock players that went to the AFL prior to our joining and they were making six figure salaries. They are taking a pay cut to stay in the game, it is not easy to continue. But if they want to continue their football career, this, the AFL is the best place to do that."

"One of our former players Charles Dillon, was spotted at one of our off season workouts because he caught the attention of the Green Bay Packers. They asked him to come into the offices and signed him after giving him a private workout. He still has to make the Packers roster, but what a great thing."

"The Shock, as part of joining the AFL, a fan based league we held three national open tryouts. One in Los Angeles, one in Atlanta and one in Pullman, Washington home of the Washington State Cougars. Now I can say that nearly 90% of the participants in our tryouts were there by invitation. Our Director of Player Personnel Ryan Rigmaiden did a great job with these events."

How do you tell a traditional football fan about Arena Football? "I only found out about the game five years ago. Once I saw a game, I was hooked. There are so many different elements to the game. Things that separate it from the outdoor game. Field size, speed, the nets, scoring and more. Once a purist attends, they will be glad they did."

Youth Catcher's Gear Adds Sticker Shock

Youth catcher's gear provided me with some serious sticker shock last week. Many of you have read and commented on my story about having to finally say goodbye to my old friend, my catcher's mitt. This companion for several years has endured numerous repairs until it finally gave out, sending me on a shopping trip for new gear.

Shopping for new catcher's gear was not for me, but instead for my team. I needed to upgrade our gear, and although todays catchers often show up to team day with their own equipment, a coach realizes he will have kids with zero to less than adequate baseball equipment.

Shopping for a catchers mitt got out of hand and turned into a quandary as to whether I should purchase the complete catchers set also. I don't really like doing this because I like to fit the gear to the player and pawing through the shelf items I could tell that what came in the set was going to take some work depending on the kid in that position.

Lately I have been coaching 12 year old players and at that age, they come in all sizes. Most are quite big and will grow into sizable young ball players. There is always the young man who is going to be tall and lean. Long arms, perfect for firing a rocket to second, but these are also the ones most problematic in a crouch.The gear never seems to fit their lanky limbs properly. Chest protectors are usually too short for them too.

Last year our catcher was short and wide, perfect for a backstop, but he also had difficulty rising from a crouch. The gear on him had to be altered extensively as his wide girth stretched the limits of fabric. We added some Velcro because when the gear was properly fitted to this young man, he became a much better baseball catcher.

I perused the aisle, amazed at the prices for a lot of equipment that is not very good. All the major manufacturers were represented, Wilson, Easton, Rawlings. I would spend in excess of 0 for catchers equipment and I still needed to buy a mitt. The problem with a set is that you get what is in the box.

In the end, I elected to purchase the catchers gear separately. I bought 2 chest protectors, both sized differently and by different manufacturers. I have a buddy who owns a shoe shop and I could tell already he would be enlisted to add some padding under the rib perimeter area of one. The mask I bought had a throat protector and a wide frame with an open wire grid. I made sure the ears would be protected with the new styled wrap now available.

I don't buy the hockey mask type catchers helmet mask because these are too individual and sized for the player. Our budget does not allow for this so the team gear will be a helmet and mask combo. I still have not purchased a new mitt and this is an expense I am not looking forward to. The new soft leather is enticing, but I wonder if it is durable enough to last a lifetime, like my last glove. Then again, do I need a catchers glove to last another lifetime?

Laying in his neatly made bunk, with every muscle in his body throbbing from the 500 pushups he did because his Drill Sergent found Doritos in his trunk again. He plots. He thinks. He ponders. Is some of this situation his fault? Maybe he should take more responsibility around the house, or maybe he should attend school more. He remembers the essay he wrote when he was 12 years old. It was titled "I want to be president". Maybe he has been very disruptive to his mother; he knows that she works hard for his sake. She has provided everything he owns. As he looks at the Air Jordans placed neatly on the floor right beside him he starts to think about the valentine card he made his mother in 3rd grade. She was so proud to get it. Her face turned red as the joy spilled from her pores. But reality hits him like a ton of bricks when Drill Sergent walks into the cabin with the same horse voice, yelling the same three words he has yelled since day 1 "lights out ladies". He hates being called a lady.

He shuts his eyes as tight as he possibly can to try to hold back a new tear. He is within 10 feet of the next bunk. Surely the other teens will start all over again if they hear one whimper from Stanley. A tear does fall to his crisp white pillow case, but he does not make a sound. Once again he looks for someone to blame this situation on. He refocuses his negative energy on the one person who loves him more than any other person in the world--his mother.

When she picks him up three weeks later, she notices he has bruises around his eye. This was a fight that he started in attempt to restore some of his street cred. She also notices that he has lost the 25lbs she has been hoping he would lose for the past three years. He looks good. But what is this? She notices a look that she is all to familiar with. It's in his eyes, but this time it is even more amped. It is the exact look she hoped she would not see. Hell, she even paid 00 so she would not see the look. It is a look of...revenge!
