What is a shock collar?

Shock

A shock collar is a type of collar that administers a light shock to your pet when he behaves in a manner that you do not approve of. Some models are operated by you via a remote control and others are operated via a radio signal transmitted from a wire that you install. The latter type is generally used to train a dog to stay in a certain area. If you use a shock collar be sure to get a type that has an adjustable shock level. You will want to start with the collar on the lowest setting so that the dog is not hurt; it can be turned up if the dog does not respond to the lower setting.

How is it used?

The way that a shock collar trains your dog is simple. If the dog is doing something you do not approve of, you push the button on the remote and give the dog a little shock. The dog will probably not learn from just one shock, so you may have to shock them several times before they realize that the behavior is bringing an uncomfortable feeling. After several times, they will get the connection and stop the unwanted behavior. The key to training any animal is consistency and this rule applies to the use of a shock collar. The dog has to be shocked every time it does the unwanted behavior for the training to work.

An electronic collar is very effective for stopping many unwanted behaviors. You can train your pet not to get on the furniture, not to jump on people, not to dig and many other common problems that people have with their dogs. In order to be consistent, you should carry the remote with you at all times initially, so that when the dog misbehaves you can correct him. Remember to use the lowest setting to start; you are disciplining the dog, not torturing him. The button should never be held for more than 5 seconds. Many collars allow you to turn the shock off and use an audible warning and many dogs can be effectively trained with the audible warning only.
